Lately my work has been under the major influence of Italian designers and brands. It all started last March, a week before my trip to Italy.
On April I spent a week in Italy, and enjoyed walking down the streets of Rome, Milan and Venice (gelato in hand) people watching, cool hunting and trend spotting (some of my favorite things to do when I travel). After going on shopping sprees and walks, I would gather all the images in my head and whenever I’d go on a train or plane ride, pour everything onto my Moleskine.
The peak of my Italian designer obsession was visiting the Gucci flagship store at via Montenapoleone in Milan (one of the chicest shopping circuits in Europe). I’m absolutely loving what Alessandro Michele is doing with Gucci.
Other amazing places to shop are the Vittorio Emanuelle Gallery in Milano, the shops around the Piazza Spagna in Rome, and the Calle Larga XXII de Marzo in Venice. Besides Gucci, other Italian brands and designers I favor Valentino, Moschino, Prada, Miu Miu, Dolce & Gabbana and Missoni (I live-sketched for the latter in an event in Miami. Dream come true!)
Some of the fashion staples loved and rocked by Italian women are trench coats, t-shirt dresses, Italian leather goods (bags and purses to die for!) and amazing silver arm parties (which is a staple for me personally as well).
I would say the influence in my illustrations is quite visible, and that it’s here to stay.
What is your favorite place in the world to people watch? xo
